Do I need sailing experience or a qualification?

If you have some previous skippering experience you can join a flotilla and skipper your own yacht. Your experience will be either from a previous flotilla holiday or from yacht sailing in the UK. At least one other person should be competent crew standard.

At present only the port authorities in Croatia and Mallorca require an internationally recognised certificate of competence for the skipper of a flotilla yacht, eg RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or RYA Day Skipper Practical.

The RYA ICC will in the near future be required by Greek and Turkish port authorities but if you have skipper experience it is easily obtained in a day from RYA sailing schools in the UK such as Hamilton Sailing or Brixham Sea School

"Our whole time in the Grenadines could not have been better. After two days on Bequia visiting friends, a brilliant four to five hour sail with a perfect wind took us down to Salt Whistle Bay on the island of Mayreau. A very busy anchorage where locals acted as parking attendants to squeeze in as many boats as possible to maximize customers for their shore barbeque where they fed us an excellent dinner. The following morning we did the very short passage round to the Tobago Cays. There followed two nights of gorgeous weather, lovely snorkelling with turtles cruising about everywhere and lobster dinners ashore. Could not have been better. "
