Yacht Charter from Grado

Charter from Grado on the north-east corner of Italy between Trieste and Venice.

From this exciting new base just north of Venice explore the Gulf of Trieste, a renowned sailing area and home to the famous annual Barcolana sailing regatta. Discover a beautiful rocky coastline, amazingly clear waters and sandy beaches at Grado and Lignano. Further east lies the undiscovered coastline of Slovenia and the Istrian coast of Croatia.

To the west lies Venice. It is possible to explore large areas of the Venetian Lagoon on your yacht calling at the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. From here take a water bus or taxi into the centre of Venice.

The Adriatic sea is mainly swept by two winds: the Bora blowing from north-east, cool and dry, and the Sirocco blowing from south-east, warm and wet. Julius Caesar’s ships maintained communications with the legions in the ancient Roman city of Aquileia using the changes of the wind. The island of Grado was the first port for these ancient navigators who sailed to Aquileia.

Ryanair have daily flights Stansted & Birmingham to Trieste. Transfer time to Grado 1 hour.

Whether you are an experienced sailor or setting foot on a yacht for the first time, we can offer you a holiday afloat to suit you. We have given all the sailing areas a level with 'Experience Level 1' suitable for less experienced crews and 'Experience Level 3' for the experts.

This takes into account the wind strength, tidal range and currents, distances between stops and ease of mooring. Of course even experts may choose to sail in Level 1 areas as they still offer stunning scenery and great sailing.

Experience Level 1: Malta

Generally light winds Force 2-4, line of sight navigation, shorter sailing distances under 20nm. You will be Day Skipper standard having sailed at least 1 week or 100nm as skipper

Experience Level 2: Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Naples & Grado

Stronger winds up to Force 3-5 with some longer passages up to 30nm. You will be Day Skipper standard having sailed at least 2 weeks or 200nm as skipper

Experience Level 3:

Stronger winds up to Force 4-7 which can lead to bigger seas on long passages between the islands. You will be Coastal Skipper
standard with experience to a higher level having sailed at least 4 weeks or 400nm as skipper.

To charter a yacht bareboat or on flotilla you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew.

At present you need an RYA Day Skipper qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for charters in Croatia, Montenegro, Mallorca, Tenerife and Malta.

The RYA ICC will be ever more required by overseas port authorities but if you have skipper experience it is easily obtained in a day from RYA sailing schools in the UK such as Hamilton Sailing or Brixham Sea School

Grado was the official health resort for the Hapsburg Empire and is now a popular seaside resort. The quaint old town has many restaurants serving fresh seafood - try the local speciality, a tasty fish stew called the Boreto. Just 11km north of Grado is Aquileia - once one of the biggest cities in the Roman Empire. It was founded in 181BC and the remains of its market, river harbour and basilica make an interesting trip.

Tourists are not permitted to sail or moor in the internal canals of the historic city centre of Venice, but you can sail in Venetian Lagoon and visit the islands of Burano, Murano and Torcello. Take one of the frequent water taxi-bus into the heart of Venice for a night out in this amazing city. Start at St Mark's Square and explore the charming canals and backstreets.

Trieste is a large vibrant city, set right on the northern Adriatic and Piazza dell’Unità is one of the loveliest and largest sea-front city squares in the world. Apart from the impressive mix of architectire from Roman times onwards, it's famous for its real passion for coffee and coffee-drinking rituals. This passion dates back a long way, and when you go into some of the beautiful old cafes it's like stepping into another age.
