Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 tropical islands off the north-western coast of Malaysia. The archipelago has some of the world's most pristine rainforests, limestone and karst formations, caves with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, and among the world's most beautiful beaches washed by clear emerald waters teeming with marine life. It’s a unique paradise for a sailing holiday and Langkawi was declared a Geopark by UNESCO in 2007.
The outstanding natural landscape is covered in lush ancient rainforest and framed by blue skies. The snorkelling is superb, especially at Coral Garden on Pulau Payar Island. The island of Langkawi is an exotic sailing holiday destination that offers world-class accommodation and amenities sitting side by side with idyllic beaches, ancient rainforests and quaint villages. Head up the thrilling new cable car to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang - Langkawi's second highest mountain - for an unrivalled view of the entire main island and beyond.
Sailing in Malaysia
Langkawi is a haven for yacht charter. Three marinas have modern international-class facilities, including the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and Rebak Marina on the island of Pulau Rebak Besar.
The islands south of Langkawi are within easy reach and include the developing fishing village of Pulau Tuba where you’ll find many good basic Malay style restaurants. Pulau Dayang Bunting has small beaches with access to a cave and stream. From here sail to the beautiful freshwater Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, which has many good anchorages.
You can sail north of Langkawi across the border to Thailand where you’ll find Ko Tarutao and the Butangs – a world famous scuba diving area where enthusiasts and first time divers find fish and colourful creatures of all kinds in the warm crystal clear water.
Alternatively during the summer months you can also sail from Tioman Island situated off the east coast of Malaysia in the South China Sea. The Tioman archipelago is a truly unknown corner of paradise offering a wide range of activities for visitors. Snorkel in crystal clear waters, discover the beautiful underwater world or just lie upon the white sandy beaches while you relax. The twin peaks of Gunung Nenek Semukut provide a prominent landmark to the island reputed to be one of the most beautiful and idyllic in the world.
DAY 1 : Embark at Telaga Marina, in the north-west of the island. .
DAY 2 : Pantai Chenang (7nm). Moor at Monkey Beach, a beautiful fine white sandy beach. All along the Pantai Cenang beach, the most popular in Langkawi, there are restaurants and shops.
DAY 3 : Pulau Dayang Bunting (8nm). Visit the "Pregnant Princess Lake", the biggest fresh water lake of Langkawi in an exceptional natural environment famed for mysterious legends.
DAY 4 : Pulau Payar (20nm). A marine reserve with superb snorkelling, especially at Coral Garden, where you'll see fabulous corals and multicoloured fishes. Superb sandy beach for sunbathing.
DAY 5 : Kuah Town (20nm). Mooring in front of capital of Langkawi, with numerous restaurants, shops and duty free shops in the city.
DAY 6 : Kilim Natural Park (25nm). You enter in another world, a billion years old, cliffs emerging above verdant mangroves. Possibility to dine in the middle of mangrove at "fish farm".
DAY 7 : Datai (16nm) Tanjung Rhu Beach on North Cape of Langkawi has a great view of surrounding islands. Moor in front of the stylish Datai hotel.
DAY 8 : Return to Telanga Marina (5nm).
Sailing conditions
There are two seasons. During the November to April season, the weather is consistently sunny and dry with calm seas and the NE winds 10-15 knots are ideal for sailing. In the May to October season, the SW winds pick up, though sailing is still sheltered in most of the cruising area. Langkawi on the west coast s a very pleasant sailing destination all year but in the summer months Tioman on the east coast has better sailing conditions. The area is tidal with a range of approximately 2m. Experience Level 2.

Yachts are based at Telega Marina on Langkawi all year and at Tioman during May to October. Charters start and finish any day (minimum 5 nights), giving you total flexibility over your holiday dates.

British Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines have direct flights to Kuala Lampur and Singapore. Malaysia Airlines have daily flights onward to Langkawi. Transfer time Langkawi airport to Telaga Harbour Marina 20 minutes.
Berjaya Air operate daily flights Kuala Lampur to Tioman. Transfer time Tioman to marina 10 minutes.
