Sailing Holidays in Malaysia

The 99 tropical islands in the Langkawi archipelago offer a fabulous sailing holiday with luxury resorts, beautiful beaches and idyllic bays.

Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 tropical islands off the north-western coast of Malaysia. The archipelago has some of the world's most pristine rainforests, limestone and karst formations, caves with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, and among the world's most beautiful beaches washed by clear emerald waters teeming with marine life. It’s a unique paradise for a sailing holiday and Langkawi was declared a Geopark by UNESCO in 2007.

The outstanding natural landscape is covered in lush ancient rainforest and framed by blue skies. The snorkelling is superb, especially at Coral Garden at Pulau Payar Marine Park. The island of Langkawi is an exotic sailing holiday destination that offers world-class accommodation and amenities sitting side by side with idyllic beaches, ancient rainforests and quaint villages. Head up the thrilling new cable car to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang - Langkawi's second highest mountain - for an unrivalled view of the entire main island and beyond.

Langkawi is a haven for yacht charter. Three marinas have modern international-class facilities, including the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and Rebak Marina on the island of Pulau Rebak Besar.

The islands south of Langkawi are within easy reach and include the developing fishing village of Pulau Tuba where you’ll find many good basic Malay style restaurants. Pulau Dayang Bunting has small beaches with access to a cave and stream. From here sail to the beautiful freshwater Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, which has many good anchorages.

You can sail north of Langkawi across the border to Thailand where you’ll find Ko Tarutao and the Butangs – a world famous scuba diving area where enthusiasts and first time divers find fish and colourful creatures of all kinds in the warm crystal clear water.

Alternatively during the summer months you can also sail from Tioman Island situated off the east coast of Malaysia in the South China Sea. The Tioman archipelago is a truly unknown corner of paradise offering a wide range of activities for visitors. Snorkel in crystal clear waters, discover the beautiful underwater world or just lie upon the white sandy beaches while you relax. The twin peaks of Gunung Nenek Semukut provide a prominent landmark to the island reputed to be one of the most beautiful and idyllic in the world.

There are two seasons. During the November to April season, the weather is consistently sunny and dry with calm seas and the NE winds 10-15 knots are ideal for sailing. In the May to October season, the SW winds pick up, though sailing is still sheltered in most of the cruising area. Langkawi on the west coast s a very pleasant sailing destination all year but in the summer months Tioman on the east coast has better sailing conditions. The area is tidal with a range of approximately 2m.

Whether you are an experienced sailor or setting foot on a yacht for the first time, we can offer you a holiday afloat to suit you. We have given all the sailing areas a level with 'Experience Level 1' suitable for less experienced crews and 'Experience Level 3' for the experts.

This takes into account the wind strength, tidal range and currents, distances between stops and ease of mooring. Of course even experts may choose to sail in Level 1 areas as they still offer stunning scenery and great sailing.

Experience Level 1: Whitsundays

Generally light winds Force 2-4, line of sight navigation, shorter sailing distances under 20nm. You will be Day Skipper standard having sailed at least 1 week or 100nm as skipper

Experience Level 2: Thailand, Malaysia

Stronger winds up to Force 3-5 with some longer passages up to 30nm. You will be Day Skipper standard having sailed at least 2 weeks or 200nm as skipper

Experience Level 3: Seychelles, Tahiti

Stronger winds up to Force 4-7 which can lead to bigger seas on long passages between the islands. You will be Coastal Skipper standard with experience to a higher level having sailed at least 4 weeks or 400nm as skipper.

To charter a yacht bareboat or on flotilla you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew.

At present you need an RYA Day Skipper qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for charters in Croatia, Mallorca, Tenerife and Malta.

The RYA ICC will be ever more required by overseas port authorities but if you have skipper experience it is easily obtained in a day from RYA sailing schools in the UK such as Hamilton Sailing or Brixham Sea School

Multihulls World Magazine featured "Langkawi, the ultimate destination" in the September 2009 issue. Click here to read>>

They say: "The Asian light, the scenery which is as beautiful as at the origin of the world, the kindness of the inhabitants. Everything is there to make this destination become a great classic."

Pulau Payar- a  jewel of an island, is one of Langkawi's major draws, famous for its spectacularly beautiful coral gardens. You can either dive or snorkel to be among the fishes and explore the corals. If you don't wish to get wet, the special Underwater Observatory allows you to experience a close-up view of marine life.

The Langkawi Cable Car is an exhilarating 20 minutes journey to the Peak Station. The 360º panorama from the peak offers a breathtaking view of the islands, the rural lowlands and the seas as far as Thailand. Take in the great vista of hillside flora, a bird's eye view of the Telaga Tujuh waterfalls and an occasional glimpse of the wildlife.

"Have used Nautilus now for many years and have always been well pleased with the performance. This year we had the privilege of a brand new yacht! The base managers were spot on with briefing and advice and the technician on the dock was excellent with the practical yacht systems brief. Very efficient and no time wasted."
