Breathtaking scenery, idyllic bays, turquoise waters as far as the eye can see and a unique energy which is both relaxed and fiery at the same time causes visitors to flock to the shores of the Mediterranean each summer.
There are many considerations when booking your ideal sailing holiday in the Mediterranean so let us take one predicament off your plate and break down exactly when the best time of year to sail in the Mediterranean is.

Can I sail in the Mediterranean outside of the summer sailing season?
When is the quietest time to sail in the Mediterranean?
When is the cheapest time to sail in the Mediterranean?
What is the weather like in the Mediterranean?
How do I decide when to sail in the Mediterranean?
Where can I sail in the Mediterranean?
What types of sailing holidays can I go on in the Mediterranean?
The sailing season in the Mediterranean runs from April to October with the peak season being late June, July, August and early September. July and August are the most popular months to holiday in the Med and are also when you will find the warmest temperatures.
Sailing in the Mediterranean at the beginning or the end of the season gives you pleasantly warm temperatures and a quieter sailing ground. Certain destinations are particularly suited to early or end of season sailing, read about them in our article 'Top 5 destinations for end of season sailing in the Mediterranean'.
Many fleets in the Mediterranean shut down during the winter months and use this time to perform maintenance on the yachts. There are however areas where chartering a yacht in the Mediterranean during the winter months is possible.
Certain yacht charter destinations have many beautiful, sunny days year-round and can give you a well-needed dose of sunshine close to home. The Balearic and Canary Islands with their regular, warm daytime temperatures, are popular choices for winter sailing in the Mediterranean. Weather and sailing conditions can be more variable during the winter months so this is something that you need to be aware of if sailing in the Mediterranean outside of the main sailing season.
If you are looking for a tranquil sailing holiday in the Mediterranean then we would recommend travelling in the shoulder seasons of May/early June or late September/October. At these times of year you will still find lovely warm temperatures and great sailing conditions but the sailing areas will be quieter and prices for yachts, flights and mooring fees will generally be lower than the peak season of July and August.
Taking your holiday in the Mediterranean outside of the peak summer holiday months enables you to dive deeper into the local culture and experience the local traditions, customs, cuisine and attractions without crowds of tourists. If you are looking for an active holiday or want to explore many land-based sights, hikes, bike trails etc then travelling during Spring or Autumn also means you will have more moderate temperatures which may make all this activity more comfortable!
The quieter months of April/May and late September/October will generally see lower yacht prices and better availability. This is not the case for all destinations though, for example Turkey is incredibly popular in September and yachts can get booked up well in advance.
Travelling outside of the main school holiday dates will give you access to lower priced airfares which can make a big difference to the overall cost of your sailing holiday.
Summer in the Mediterranean is hot and dry with average temperatures peaking in July and August at around 28-32 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is rare during these peak summer months. Certain destinations can see a few days of stronger winds in the summer months but generally the sailing conditions are steady and provide great sailing.
During the shoulder seasons of April/May and late September/October, the average temperatures are lower but still very pleasant. Nighttime temperatures will fall and so having warmer clothes for the evenings and mornings will be necessary. Sea temperatures will be warmest towards the end of the summer sailing season and nice and refreshing at the beginning!
The best time for you and your crew to sail in the Mediterranean will be a personal decision that will depend on many factors, however we do have some tips for working out the best time for your group to travel.

We offer sailing holidays for all in the Mediterranean and the type of sailing holiday you choose will mostly depend on your sailing experience. For experienced sailors with a sailing qualification, a bareboat yacht charter or flotilla holiday would likely be the sailing holiday of choice.
For newly qualified sailors, a flotilla holiday gives the opportunity to sail in some of the best destinations in the Mediterranean whilst also having the reassuring support and knowledge of the flotilla lead crew. The lead crew is made up of an experienced skipper and first mate who know the sailing area incredibly well and guide you to all the best spots to visit, keep you informed on weather conditions, help with mooring etc. Flotilla holidays are popular with couples, friends and families alike.
If you are just looking to start out on your sailing journey then an RYA practical sailing course will give you the qualifications you need to be the skipper of your own yacht and charter a yacht bareboat or on flotilla in yacht charter destinations worldwide. We work with several RYA sailing schools in Gibraltar, Greece, Croatia and Dubai.
For those with no sailing experience or who are just wanting to sit back and relax and enjoy your time on the water, we have sailing holidays for you too! Choose a skippered yacht charter, crewed yacht charter or cabin charter to have a professional skipper onboard taking care of all the sailing so that you don't have to.
Skippers can be added to a bareboat yacht charter in any of our Mediterranean sailing destinations, giving you the widest choice of yachts and destinations to meet the needs of your group.
For an unforgettable holiday take a look at our crewed yacht options which come with a skipper and hostess/chef onboard a luxury yacht in some of the best sailing areas in the Mediterranean. Spend your time relaxing, swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding or kayaking whilst your crew ensure you see all the best sights and cook up delicious meals with fresh, local ingredients.
Cabin charters are a fantastic affordable and sociable option for individuals, couples or small groups. Cabin charters come with a skipper and hostess/chef just like the crewed yachts but at a fraction of the price since you are sharing the yacht with others rather than renting the entire yacht yourself. All our cabin charters are on spacious catamarans with double bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.
