RYA Competent Crew Course

A 5-day course for the complete beginner. This is where you will find out what sailing and life aboard a sailing yacht is all about. No prior knowledge is required and the aim of the course is to turn you into a valuable and useful crew member.

Course Overview

  • Pre Course Experience: None
  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Minimum Duration: 5 days (17:00 Sunday - 17:00 Friday)
  • Course Content: Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties.
  • Ability After Course: By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines on board.

If you are already a competent crew member, this is a popular combination of courses to take your sailing to the next level. You study navigation & chart-work over the weekend immediately before taking your RYA Day Skipper Practical.

Course Overview

  • Pre Course Experience: RYA Competent Crew or equivalent experience. Completion of the RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship online theory course is compulsory before arriving in Aegina.
  • Minimum Duration: 7 days (Saturday-Friday)
  • Course Content: Navigation & chart work. Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation.
  • Ability After Course: Can skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.
  • Flights: Flights to Athens and transfers by ferry to Aegina are not included.

This package includes the content of the Competent Crew course, and the content of the Day Skipper Practical course with theory incorporated. This means that at the end of the course you will have the skills to skipper your own boat safely and confidently in calm waters.

  • Course Content: Knowledge of terms & parts, sail handling, rope work, safety, basic meteorology, helmsmanship, general duties, keeping a log, sail with a dinghy, pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation & chart work.
  • Ability After Course: Steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy, assist in all the day-to-day routines on board and skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.
  • Flights: Flights to Athens and transfers by ferry to Aegina are not included.

RYA Day Skipper Course

A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. The RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate is recognised around the world and is ideal for people looking to charter their own yacht in the future.

Course Overview

  • Pre Course Experience: Basic sailing ability - 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht.
  • Assumed Knowledge: Basic navigation and helmsmanship with theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level. It is recommended that you attend the Day Skipper theory course online before taking this practical course.
  • Minimum Duration: 5 days (17:00 Sunday - 17:00 Friday)
  • Course Content: Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising.
  • Ability After Course: Can skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.
