RYA Competent Crew Course

A 5-day course for the complete beginner. This is where you will find out what sailing and life aboard a sailing yacht is all about. No prior knowledge is required and the aim of the course is to turn you into a valuable and useful crew member.

Course Overview

  • Pre Course Experience: None
  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Minimum Duration: 5 days
  • Course Content: Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties.
  • Ability After Course: By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines on board.

RYA Day Skipper Course

RYA Day Skipper Course

A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. The RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate is recognised around the world and is ideal for people looking to charter their own yacht in the future.

Course Overview

  • Pre Course Experience: Basic sailing ability - 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht.
  • Assumed Knowledge:

    Basic navigation and helmsmanship with theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level. It is recommended that you attend the Day Skipper theory course online before taking this practical course.

  • Minimum Duration: 5 days
  • Course Content: Preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, night cruising.
  • Ability After Course: Can skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.
